British Literature Class Notes -- March 6 (Week 6)

Greetings!

Even with a partial class, we had a great discussion yesterday. I attribute that to good careful readers and a great book.  Charles Dickens is a brilliant writer, and Great Expectations is a rich book -- I never run out of points to discuss.  For our discussion this week, I asked the students to come to class prepared with some critical thinking questions, and they did a great job.  We discussed:
-- changes in Pip's character;
-- the affects of money on Pip;
-- Pip's response to Joe;
-- Jagger's personality.

I have an older BBC version of the book, and we watched the scene when Joe comes to visit Pip in London and when Wemmick takes Pip to visit his "Castle" and his "Aged Parent."

As a Final Exam for the book, I'd like the students to write a short essay (at least 3 paragraphs) responding to the following statement, which is one of the main themes of the book:
"True goodness does not come from social status or wealth; it comes from inner worth."

Assignments for Next Week:
-- Read to page 298.
-- Begin work on collecting ideas for the final exam
-- Come to class with 3 discussion questions.

Have a great week!
Mrs. Prichard
