We had another good class this week. For the past 3 weeks I've asked the students to come to class prepared with discussion questions. We take time at the beginning of the class for them write their thoughts about one another's questions.
We're three-quarters of the way through the book. A lot of our discussion this week centered on Pip and his character development. Great Expectations is a bildungsroman which is German for "formation novel." As a coming-of-age story, we're reading about the growth and changes of Pip as he journey's through life.
More resources that give information about characterization found in Great Expectations are: Pip's Playing at Life; Pip's Repressed Conscience; Pip's Guilt; The Development of Pip's Character.
As a Final Exam for the book, I'd like the students to write a short essay (at least 3 paragraphs) responding to the following statement, which is one of the main themes of the book:
"True goodness does not come from social status or wealth; it comes from inner worth."
We discussed this in class; it will be due the week after Spring Break.
Assignments for Next Week:
-- Finish Great Expectations
-- Write 3 Discussion Questions

Have a great week!
