We had an insightful discussion about Beowulf this week. To prepare for the discussion, I had the students take some time and write some initial thoughts about the following questions:
1. What role does the mead-hall play in Anglo-Saxon warrior culture?
2. What is the role of women in the heroic culture of Beowulf?
3. What is the role of treasure in the story?
4. Is Beowulf an ideal hero and king?
They shared some good thoughts and showed that they had carefully read the story.
Our next reading assignment is Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. One of Shakespeare's most well-known and well-liked comedies, this play is easier to read because it's not written in verse like the others. They are to read Acts I, II, and III for next week.
Assignments for next week:
-- Read the handouts about the characters and the themes.
-- Read Acts I, II, and III
