British Literature Class Notes -- February 13 (Week 5)

Greetings!

We had a great class this week.  I enjoy having quality discussions about literature with bright students.

We finished our study and discussion of Much Ado About Nothing.  This has been a good Shakespeare play to explore as an example of his comedies.  His plays on words, mistaken identities, love connections, and verbal sparring are stock pieces of his lighter plays.

We began the class with some pre-discussion writing.  This has been a good classroom strategy because it helps the students to take some time to think deliberately about our literature at the start of the class.  I gave them four questions that were about the plot, the theme of deception (reality vs. appearance), the relationship of Benedict and Beatrice, and the comic character of Dogberry.

In addition to finishing Much Ado About Nothing, we began reading Dickens's Great Expectations.  I gave them some handouts that give background information on Dickens and the novel.  Some critics argue that Great Expectations is Dickens's greatest work.  He wrote this novel as a serial in order to save his magazine that was failing financially.  We discussed the first five chapters which include introductions of some of the major characters.  We looked closely at some examples of Dickens's clever writing style.

Assignments for Next Week:
-- Read to page 103 of Great Expectations
-- Read the handouts for the book.
