British Literature Class Notes -- Week 3 (January 30)

Greetings!
I'm glad we could all make it to class today, considering how messy the roads were.
Since we missed class last week, we were not able to discuss the first half of our first book, Beowulf.  Today, we looked at the book as a whole.  When looking at a whole book, some of the finer details are often overlooked.  That may have happened with this book, but I feel that the students have a good feeling for what this piece of literature is all about.
We followed an agenda for the class that we will do for most of our classes this semester.  The students are to bring to class some discussion questions for the assigned reading.  These questions should be deeper, critical thinking questions.  Since this week was the first time for doing this, the students brought to class some great questions.  I put them on the board, and they were the "quick writes" for the day.  We then talked over their thoughts about the book.
The next two weeks will be spent on our Shakespeare selection:  Much Ado About Nothing.  This is one of my favorite plays.  For next week we will be reading the first half of the book and will finish it the next week.
Assignments for Next Week:
-- Read Acts I & II of Much Ado
-- Write up and bring to class 3 discussion questions
