British Literature Class Notes -- Week 1 (January 16)

Greetings!

Welcome to British Literature!  I'm excited about this class, not only because I love the literature that we'll be reading, but because I know that this will be a great group of students.

We'll be reading some classics of British literature in chronological order.  I've chosen works that are representative of the canon of works from England; my hopes are that these books will spark an interest and they will explore more novels, poetry, and drama.

Our readings:
Beowulf (anon)
Much Ado About Nothing (Shakespeare)
Great Expectations (Dickens)
Selections of Romantic Period Poetry
Selections of Victorian Period Poetry
Pygmalion (Shaw)
39 Steps (Buchan)

Resources for the class:
-- Weekly Class Notes
-- Weekly Blogs (same content as the Class Notes)
-- Dropbox document storage site
-- Engrade (an assignment and grading website)
(If you have any questions about these, let me know.  Some students already have Engrade accounts through other classes.  If that is the case, let me know the student number, and I can adjust the number for the account for this class.)

As an introduction, we began by looking over a very brief history of English literature.  For next week, each student is to take one type of literature from one period and summarize the key points.  Feel free to check Wikipedia or other sources to supplement your information.

The remainder of our time was spent getting ready to read Beowulf.  We read some introductory material and looked at the book.

In this class, we'll do a lot of reading and only a little bit of writing.  Some of the selections will be more challenging and it will be important to give enough time to digest the books.  Reading a portion of the assignment every day will be a good strategy.

Assignments for Next Week:
-- Read to page 30 in Beowulf
-- Read the background information about Beowulf.
-- Bring to class 2 discussion questions for the assigned reading.
